Our Garden's Progress

I'm so impressed with our little garden.

As of last night when Kristen and I were looking it over, on the front porch we have:

4 cucumbers
5 cherokee purple heirloom tomatoes
7 red celebrity tomatoes
2 yellow jubilee heirloom tomatoes

They're smaller, but growing every day. One of the yellow jubilee's is very large and should be changing color soon. Although I'm trying my best not to pluck it green and fry up some slices. (Mmmm...fried green tomatoes, yum!)

Unfortunately the lettuce I think is a lost cause. I may try replanting at least one of the pots. We have plenty of shoots in one pot and leaves, but no actual heads of lettuce. Kristen & Aidan have been chasing the birds out of it on a daily basis.

The herbs aren't doing well either. I never had a chance to replant them, and they were doing fine in their original nursery containers. I had used a ton of the parsley already, but with the heat of the past few weeks they went belly-up. I'm considering giving it another shot since herb plants are relatively cheap. I'd also like to get some onions and other fall vegetables to put in.

By the time all is said and done we should have enough for me to can several jars of pickles, stewed tomatoes, salsa & sauce with plenty leftover to share. I'd also like to get some flats of strawberries and blackberries soon to put up some jelly.

We're already planning how to expand our garden next year. We'll have to give up some patio space, but I think it's worth it to know where our veggies are coming from and what was sprayed on them. (nothing, HAHA!) Ideally we'd like to start seeds in the basement next year instead of buying plants. We'll see how that goes. The cats love eating leafy things, especially Victor, and any type of sprout or plant within kitty-reach is a goner in this house.
